constant noises driving me crazy!!
Hi,

Havent been on for awhile. Jay is 12 now and lower end of spectrum. But the past few weeks he has been making constant 'Shh... Shh... noises and loud outbursts which sound like agitation, stress or its a phase that will hopefully pass after time!..hes made noises in the past but its nothing like this noise. He doees have moments of being calm and no noises but very far and inbetween!

Ive tried to show him quiet voice and copied the 'sh' noises he does in a low tone but he cant grasp it. I know he cant help doing it but its so constant and loud. He really doesnt stop until he sleeps.

Any advice would be appreciated x.

RE: constant noises driving me crazy!!
Hi Donna,

I'm just browsing the boards and I noticed that no one had replied to your problem. How are things going? Is Jay still making the noises or has he stopped?

Does he actually realise he's making the noises? If he does, have you tried a social story or a comic strip conversation to explain how the noises are upsetting you?

It could be an anxiety thing or a nervous tic which has become a habit. I'm sure it is just a phase which will pass but I can understand your frustration.

RE: constant noises driving me crazy!!
Hi Donna!

As irritating as these sounds are to us, this way of stimming according to my son helps to keep him grounded. The stimulation that he gets from the vibrations caused actually help him feel more relaxed. The more I would tell him to stop, the more agitated he would become. Without mentioning the noise, I usually give him something to occupy himself, or have him use his weighted blanket. It seems to work, and I try not to draw too much attention to it as he doesn't even seem to realize when he is making his noises, which is a high-pitched squeal.Tyring other sensory stimuli (such as aromatherapy) or music seem to help as well. Hope these suggestions are helpful!

RE: constant noises driving me crazy!!
This ^^ is very similar to our son he also make very high pitched squeal noises and as Janice said trying other sensory stimuli can help. We try our best to get used to the noise and not react to it to much. But i know how hard it is having squealing all day.
